NIETC Transmission Corridor
Otzinachson Ex-Comm opposes U.S. Department of Energy's (USDOE) designation of 52 counties within in the National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor. The designation of this corridor enables utility companies to userp state regulatory powers when power lines are proposed. The PA Utility Commission has had made the final determination on powerlines in the past. However, with the designation of the NIETC, utility companies may use eminent domain powers, given to them by the USDOE through 2005 ammendments of the Energy Policy Act, to take lands anywhere within the NIETC for the purpose of installing powerlines. These lines endanger protected lands, forests, stream buffers, farmlands, communities in 52 counties. [Learn more]

Susquehanna Roseland Powerline
Otzinachson Ex-Comm opposes PP&L's proposed Susquehanna-Roseland Power line which will originate from Berwick and end in Roseland, NJ. [Learn more]

ATV Damage Assessment
Over the past decade, a number of organizations and individuals have collected photos and information about the plague of severe ATV damage on state forests, parks and game lands. While this has been informative for the leaders with whom the photos and documentation has been shared, no organization has produced an online resource that anyone can access at any time to find good photos and information about the horrendous damage that irresponsible ATV use causes to our public forest lands in Pennsylvania.

The Sierra Club PA Chapter is committed to changing that situation. We have begun asking hikers, mountain bikers, hunters, anglers and all other nature lovers to take photos of ATV trails, good or bad, and submit them to us. We will process the photos and location info and add them to the ATV damage web site that we will be rolling out within the next few months. We need your help! We depend on YOU for photos and information! See below for what we need and how you can help.

What we need: your photos, digital preferred. GPS coordinates for the location are extremely helpful, but not a necessity. We do need a very good, detailed description of the location. Be sure you're on state public land and you know where you are when you take pictures. Photos of ATV trails in good condition are also welcome, again be sure it is on state public land and you know the location. Stream crossings and wet areas are the top priority as these locations show impacts to our waters and wetlands. Pictures of any signs on trails and at trailheads are very helpful. (Please do not submit photos that were not taken on state-owned public land.)

How you can help: Please email photos and good location information, no more than 25.0 megabytes (MB) per message to Arthur Clark at atvpics88@gmail.com. Or submit photos and good location information on disc or USB thumb drive to the chapter office by mail at PA Sierra Club, P.O. Box 606, Harrisburg, PA 17108-0606. Also, please tell fellow hikers and conservationists about this project and ask them to help. This is the most important way you can help.

Opposition to Bio-Solids Processing Plant
The Executive Committee of the Otzinachson Regional Group of the Sierra Club unanimously voted to join with the Buffalo Valley Neighbors Association in opposition to the proposed industrial bio-solids processing plant to be located at 7146 Furnace Road. The environmental and health risks presented by such an operation are deplorable. National Sierra Club policy states that “Urban sludges are a highly complex, unpredictable biologically active mixture of organic material and human pathogens, some of which are resistant to antibiotics or cannot be destroyed through composting. Sludge can contain thousands of industrial chemicals, including dozens of carcinogens, hormone disrupting chemicals, toxic metals, dioxins, radionuclides and other persistent bioaccumulative poisons.” The Group also believes that the massive increase in heavy truck traffic on a country road such as Furnace Road represents a substantial threat to the public’s health and safety.

Oppose Ethanol Facility
The Otzinachson Regional Group of the Sierra Club opposes the siting and construction of the Lyco 1 Tank Farm in Pt. Township until the concerns of the community are addressed with the appropriate traffic studies, risk assessments and permit applications being completed, filed and open to public inspection.
